Lovecraftian horror seems to be all the rage these days, with modern technology in both films and video games allowing for his stories to be properly realised in ways that were thought to be impossible.

That said, the works of H.P. Lovecraft have been finding their way into gaming for decades now, with the likes of Alone in the Dark pioneering his signature style of existential cosmic horror, but perhaps there's no other game that truly brings the sheer intensity of his works to life like Call of Cthulu: Dark Corners of the Earth.

This early Xbox and PC title was a loose adaptation of the titular story that took some liberties with the source material but also managed to bring in some of his other works to create a cohesive nightmare narrative that had players grappling to retain their sanity and fend off some incredibly disturbing monsters in the process.

The game was a first-person hybrid of stealth and action, with some mild puzzle-solving thrown in for good measure. It's unpredictable story and well-designed levels kept the game engaging throughout and it's a wonder why this series has never been revisited, especially as there's a wealth of Lovecraft stories that have yet to be adapted.
