10 Forgotten Nintendo 64 Gems You Need To Play In 2022
7. Beetle Adventure Racing (1999)
VW Beetles don’t typically come to mind when racing is considered, but the Nintendo 64’s Beetle Adventure Racing totally defies that standard. It may come across as an odd marketing ploy, but the games developers really managed to knock this one out of the park.
Hailing from an era during which Electronic Arts still held a shred of integrity, Beetle Adventure Racing is so good because of the game’s fine-tuned, arcade-style mechanics. Each vehicle is a total blast to control, and they all handle exceptionally well.
What’s more, the tracks on offer are all real gems, and most seem to take inspiration from Hollywood blockbusters of the time. There’s a Temple of Doom styled course straight out of an Indiana Jones flick, a snow-capped mountain which seems to draw inspiration from several James Bond films, and a Jurassic Park themed level complete with an actual T-Rex.
Playing this forgotten gem might seem like a waste of time in 2018, but the polish has yet to wear off. In an era of microtransaction-laden Need For Speed titles, Beetle Adventure Racing may still be worth returning to.
