10 FORGOTTEN Video Games That Deserve More Love
3. Pitfall: The Lost Expedition (2004)
Pioneer the platforming genre with 1982’s Pitfall for the Atari, the Pitfall series holds an important spot in the gaming landscape. With a handful of sequels following in the years since, it’s Pitfall: The Lost Expedition which has gone unnoticed by modern audiences.
Released for the PlayStation 2, this entry transformed the eponymous hero Pitfall Harry from a voiceless sprite with no personality into a charming, wise-cracking rogue who finds himself stranded in the jungle following a plane crash.
What begins with Harry searching for fellow members of his expedition soon turns into a wild plot involving old rivalries and some supernatural elements. Brought to life with vibrant level design and a suitably wacky sense of humour, this game made for a wonderfully entertaining time.
As players progressed through the game, they’d acquire a selection of items and abilities that allow them to access previously unreachable areas. This opened the map in interesting ways and made exploring the jungle feel like a proper adventure.
Although this entry was nowhere as difficult as the original with its devious traps, it’s the endlessly likeable charm of this sequel that makes The Lost Expedition a hidden treasure that’s worth seeking out.
