When it comes to Spider-Man video games, it's often Insomniac's outstanding recent Spider-Man outings or the fan-favourite movie-tie in for Spider-Man 2 which get the most attention. However, another phenomenal game to feature the everyone's favourite webslinger was developer Neversoft's Spider-Man, which released back in 2000.

Featuring narration from the late legend Stan Lee, this game's plot saw Spidey work to clear his name after he's framed for a robbery by an imposter Spider-Man.

Along the way, his investigation causes him to cross paths with a lengthy list of iconic villains and cameos from other Marvel characters including Black Cat, Daredevil, and Punisher in what quickly ramps up into an exhilarating comic book outing.

Although the web-swinging was much simpler than the fast-paced traversal of modern Spider-Man games, this title was nevertheless hugely ambitious for its time. Players could zip up onto ceilings, crawl on walls, throw objects, and unlock a selection of alternative costumes for the hero to wear. Despite the technological limits of the time, playing this game let players live out their superhero fantasy.

Given how fantastic this game was, it's no surprise that its central mechanics would become the foundations of modern Spider-Man games.
