Video games are often designed to make the player feel powerful, to transport them to a place where they can do things they’d never be capable of in real life. Well, few games do this so comprehensively as Doshin The Giant, the late-era Japan-only God simulator that deserves a chance to be experienced by everybody in all its crazy glory.

The player takes the role of the titular colossus as he expresses his will upon an island full of villagers. Doshin can be a benevolent giant, helping to alter the landscape to aid his subjects, and even reaching down from the heavens to move the tiny, grateful islanders out of harm’s way.

Alternatively, Doshin can be a very bad giant indeed. Transforming into his rage-filled alternate form, he can stomp across the plains, squishing fleeing townsfolk and generally being a terrible nuisance. The villages will bestow love or hate upon Doshin accordingly.

The actual aim of the game is more baffling still - Doshin can help as much as he wants but ultimately life will go on, folks will live and die, and the world renews itself. It can be a beautifully zen game to experience; alternatively, you can embrace evil and smash everything up. Both are fine options.
