6. Super Mario Land

Tired with the constant kidnappings of the Mushroom Kingdom, Mario takes a well-earned sabbatical to the neighbouring Sarasaland, but it's only a matter of seconds before it all starts kicking off again. Seems Princess Daisy has been captured by the evil Tatanga, so ladies' man Mario (who's been assured she is a "bit of a looker") dons the dungarees once more and sets out to save her. It never ends, does it?

Mario Land's parallel universe provided a unique flavour to his first handheld romp, allowing for settings both Mesopotamian and Polynesian in theme. It also introduced a nasty local variant of the Koopa Troopa, which now exploded on death. As unfamiliar as the locale was though, Mario's controls remained as tight as a badger's arse, and the level design was just as inventive in olive. Plus: shoot'em sections! Bit of a busman's holiday for Mario, but a delight for the rest of us.

Benjamin was born in 1987, and is still not dead. He variously enjoys classical music, old-school adventure games (they're not dead), and walks on the beach (albeit short - asthma, you know). He's currently trying to compile a comprehensive history of video game music, yet denies accusations that he purposefully targets niche audiences. He's often wrong about these things.
