5. Super Mario Land 2: The Six Golden Coins

Although Shigeru Miyamoto stepped away from the helm for Mario's second cut-sized caper, Mario Land 2 is actually much closer to the aesthetic of its bigger brothers (no, not Luigi) than the previous effort. Mario Land excelled in being a game created specifically for small-screen surroundings, but new lead-designer Hiroji Kyotake said, "nobs to that," and instead crafted a large-scale portable plumber platformer. And as it happened, that worked too.

Mario Land 2 plays like a black and white mish-mash of Super Mario Bros. 3 and Super Mario World, which is obviously no bad thing. If you offered someone a Ferrari with the stipulation that it's only available in four shades of grey, most would take it. The Italian driver in Six Golden Coins runs just as smoothly, with invention billowing out of every exhaust pipe.
