It's interesting to note that Mario's nefarious double starred in his own game long before the plumber's leaner brother. Like Luigi's debut game, Wario's first solo episode requires hoovering up as much cash as possible. But with fewer ghosts in the way.

A sequel to Mario Land 2 in title alone, Wario Land saw the series charge off in a new direction. The mustachioed anti-hero was still required to bound between blocks, but the levels had a more open feel, with filling Wario's purse as much a priority as reaching the exit. It also introduced a series of entertaining power-ups, allowing the evil, eponymous plumber to rampage like a viking or breathe fire. These metamorphoses would become a staple of the spin-off series, each game better than the last but rarely receiving the acclaim of their mainstream brethren. Wario was a miniature star long before he was making micro-games of his own.

Benjamin was born in 1987, and is still not dead. He variously enjoys classical music, old-school adventure games (they're not dead), and walks on the beach (albeit short - asthma, you know). He's currently trying to compile a comprehensive history of video game music, yet denies accusations that he purposefully targets niche audiences. He's often wrong about these things.
