Vigilante 8 did a lot of things well: it looked better than Twisted Metal, controlled a little smoother and even featured some pretty great vehicle and level design. Whats missing is something more intangible but no less definitive: Twisted Metals dark humor was a real breath of fresh air for a rapidly maturing gaming industry. In the same way that exploitation films would attract strangely compelled masses to theaters in the early days of film, Twisted Metal captured the attention of its target audience with a surprisingly generous helping of macabre and violence. There were times when the game felt like a Tales From the Crypt kart racer. The lack of personality didnt make Vigilante 8 any less fun to play, but it did make it a more generic copycat.
