5. Jason Brody - Far Cry 3
UbisoftScared idiot kid one day, Rambo the next... and back to scared kid again? If you're the type of player who likes to venture out on your own and explore the world before sitting down and enjoying the story, you're bound to experience an odd bit of dissonance when dealing with Jason Brody, the gung-ho "hero" of Far Cry 3. At the start of the game, he's merely a foolish thrill seeking kid in his mid-twenties thrust into a terrifying situation and forced to become a warrior, or die in the jungle. Naturally, he decided to take the former route, descending down the path of a mass-murdering monster. This is clearly the intent, as his character arc is written such that you are mean to get the impression that he has transformed into a murderous psychopath slowly over the course of the game's narrative. Unfortunately, Far Cry 3's pesky open world gameplay gets in the way, making for a jarring shift in tone for many players. At the start of the game, Jason is a whimpering young man pursued by vicious pirates. For the very early game, this is likely true of the player as well, as they are ill-equipped to handle gunfights. The path to badassery isn't as long for the player as it is for Jason, leading to some very questionable characterisation. By the time the player has essentially become John Rambo, Jason Brody is still green and cowardly, taking no pleasure in fighting, despite having killed many men already. Compared to the antagonist, who is always a bloodthirsty killer, Jason can be a bit confusing, but it's not long before he, like the villains of the Far Cry series, becomes a psychopathic killer.
