10 Gaming Villains We Were Emotionally-Invested In Defeating

1. Atlas (Bioshock)

Is there anything to say about Bioshock that hasn't been said already? A true masterpiece of gaming, Bioshock marries great combat and atmosphere with a story that will keep you on the edge of your seat throughout. Plus, it has one of the most memorable plot twists in gaming history; genuinely making you question everything in the game up to that point. There are major spoilers in the following paragraph so please do yourself a favour and play through the game first. That plot twist hinges heavily on the battle between Andrew Ryan and Frank Fontaine for control of the underwater utopia of Rapture. Your seemingly friendly guide through Rapture, Atlas, turns out to be Frank Fontaine, and you've unwittingly been a pawn in his game to seize Rapture, thanks to mind control imprinting which causes your main character Jack to obey every order followed by the phrase "Would you kindly?" Atlas' comeuppance comes right at the end of Bioshock, after Jack has completely broken free of the mind control. In truth, the final showdown is a bit of an anti-climax but the build-up to the fight made us all want to get in there in the first place and kindly finish Atlas once and for all. There's plenty more villains out there whose heinous crimes need to be brought to light though. Which villains did you want to deal humiliating and crushing defeats to? Likewise, which heroes did you immediately attach yourselves to? Let us know in the comments below.

I have an addiction to achievements, a craving for new bands and a dream to become Captain America. I once finished second in a Mario Kart 7 tournament so I'm kind of a big deal.
