10 Gaming Villains We Were Emotionally-Invested In Defeating
5. GlaDOS (Portal)
It would be interesting to know whether Valve honestly predicted that Portal would be the massive success story it's become. Originally released on the Orange Box (along with Team Fortress 2 and Half-Life 2: Episode Two, two of Valve's biggest series), Portal became a smash hit thanks to a mixture of clever, original puzzling and some great black humour to tie a story around it. The majority of that black humour stems from the game's villainous A.I. GlaDOS. Constantly mocking and belittling our heroine Chell, GlaDOS proves a humorous but manipulative adversary. When Chell finally breaks free of the tests and begins to explore the bowels of Aperture Science, GlaDOS even manages to portray human emotions like fear and anger; she's a complex computer. Despite how funny we may find GlaDOS though, we want to see her defeated by the end of Portal. She seems obsessed with torturing Chell and ultimately would rather kill her with neurotoxin than let her leave. GlaDOS made a return in Portal 2 but the first Portal is a masterclass in building her up to be an interesting and unique villain that we finally want to see destroyed. Plus, she made us destroy our faithful Companion Cube. Revenge - eventually - was sweet.
I have an addiction to achievements, a craving for new bands and a dream to become Captain America. I once finished second in a Mario Kart 7 tournament so I'm kind of a big deal.
