10 Great Horror Games That Are Ugly On Purpose

Is it possible for a game to be both beautiful and ugly at the same time? The answer to that is a resounding yes. If you don't believe it, then you've clearly never played this phenomenal Swiss horror title.

Mundaun puts you in the shoes of a man returning to his hometown for his grandfather's funeral. There, you discover a mystery about your grandfather's death and venture to the top of the mountain to seek answers, fighting monsters and solving puzzles along the way.

The primary visual motif of this game is that every art asset is designed to look like it was hand-drawn inside a sketchbook. Thus, everything is black & white and looks slightly scribbly. This is more than just a visual gimmick, as the effect was achieved by the developers hand sketching every texture and scanning them onto the 3D models. So, the reason it looks hand-drawn is that it is.

Of course, while the artisan style is gorgeous, it's also deliberately rough and (literally) sketchy. It's a resoundingly bleak and reductive visual style that gives every character and location a sense of the uncanny, adding to the creepiness of the whole experience.

It's a one-of-a-kind horror you don't want to miss, especially after the amount of work it took to get it looking like this.
