10 Great Horror Games That Are Ugly On Purpose
5. Harvester
Point-and-click and horror aren't the kind of genres you'd expect to mesh well. Despite that, there have been some stellar titles that utilise the medium, such as The Cat Lady, The Walking Dead and Detention. Still, while those games range from stylish to macabre, this twisted 1996 title can be best described as grotesque.
Harvester is a point-and-click adventure game that sees you take control of an eighteen-year-old called Steve Mason. This poor lad has amnesia and gets dragged into doing strange tasks for a cult organisation known as "The Order Of The Harvest Moon". It's depicted with live-action actors scanned into the game.
One major focus of the visuals is a reliance on slimy, gross and meaty environments. There are plenty of backgrounds that will unsettle your stomach as they are designed to be fleshy and grim. The grittiness of the "live-action" actors in this world only makes the aesthetic all the more disturbing.
Overall, Harvester is an utterly bonkers, ugly and ludicrous game that thrives on being as low-brow and wild as possible - which is probably why it was banned in Germany. Nevertheless, it's a real treat if you don't mind carrying a sick bag while you play.
