10 Great Horror Games That Are Ugly On Purpose
6. Iron Lung
In many ways, you could call this game an ugly version of Subnautica in that it's based underwater, has sci-fi elements, features scary deep sea beasties and will make anyone with thalassophobia create some water of their own.
Still, despite those similarities, it's a one-of-a-kind experience.
Iron Lung is an exercise in simplicity. In the game, you are trapped inside a claustrophobic submarine and forced to investigate the depths of a blood ocean on a barren moon - sounds pretty metal! You're stuck inside this sub with no view of the terrors around you; save for photos you take on a camera connected to the vehicle. As you might expect, it seems there's something else swimming alongside you.
The inside of this submarine is repulsive to look at, as the whole thing is covered with rust and has poor lighting. This leads to an incredibly intense feeling of being trapped. Plus, the graphics are deliberately dated, rendered with a PS1-Esque visual style, making the submarine itself seem rustic and archaic.
When you're trapped under a sea of blood being hunted by an unbeatable predator, you'd want the best technology possible, but that's not what you get here.
