10 Great Video Game Developers Who Haven't Made Anything Good For Years
7. Rare
There are few studios with such genuinely seismic track records as Rare. Just run these down, and think of the impact they had on the industry.
Banjo-Kazooie, GoldenEye 007, Killer Instinct, Perfect Dark, Donkey Kong 64. Conker's Bad Fur Day, Viva Pinata... and then Microsoft lapped them up, putting them to task creating Wii Sports knock-offs like Kinect Sports and Kinect Sports Rivals, not to mention being appointed the head of Xbox's avatar program.
2018 finally saw Rare get back to creating new IP again, but it was the completely flat Sea of Thieves.
Granted, there are some brilliant features in here like manning a ship through specific team tasks or stealing other players' loot like a real-world pirate would, but Sea of Thieves was empty when it came to anything more designed.
Going forward we're getting a remake of classic brawler Battletoads, and it appears Rare are free from Microsoft's grip, but only a future of bangers can make up for a decade of them being missing in action.
