10 Great Video Game Sequels That STILL Killed Their Franchises

4. Halo 4

Halo 4
343 Industries

The first Halo game without longtime developers Bungie at the helm, the fourth entry in the franchise from 343 Studios was a surprisingly good effort that came close to matching the quality of previous titles.

As the start of a new Reclaimer trilogy though, the sequel introduced a bunch of new characters, villains and locations that would prove to be a hindrance for the development team going forward. The studio attempted to mesh this new storyline in with the existing lore, but it resulted in a halved focus that kept one foot firmly rooted in the past.

That was fine for one transitional game, but when the devs failed to flesh out these newly introduced aspects of the world going into the sequel, it became apparent that they had written themselves into a corner.

Consequently, Halo 5 had a campaign that was a jumbled mess, and often felt like a compromise to side-step the issues the studio brought upon themselves with the fourth game.

Halo isn't exactly dead, but it's become a shell of its former glory and certainly isn't 'alive', either.
