10 Greatest Black Characters In Video Games
2. Marcus Holloway - Watch Dogs 2
Following the original Watch Dog’s wildly negative reception back in 2014, Ubisoft had some major changes to make come the sequel. A lot of that negativity boiled down to a generally forgettable main character, so where do you go from there? Make the complete opposite.
Whereas the first game's Aiden Pierce was brooding and miserable, the second instalment introduced us to the stellar Marcus Holloway. Loud, excitable and hugely enjoyable, Holloway was the star of the sequel. It also helped that he was genuinely good-hearted in nature. Fighting against the oppressive Blume corporation and their ctOS system, the protagonist joins DeadSec in their fight for freedom.
Being a bit of a cliché in the fact that all he really wants to do is help people, Holloway does so with such style that it’s easy to forgive. His motives are clear from the start and he has a sincere passion for what he does, in aiding the downtrodden. His love of all things tech is truly evocative of a 21st century man of his age and he uses his knowledge of all things we as a society utilize today – social media, ATMs, security cameras etc – for something greater than just himself.
Marcus Holloway oozes passion and style, a far cry from his predecessor and one of the reasons Watch Dogs 2 was such a step up from the original. The fact that not him but Aiden Pierce is making a return for the upcoming Watchdogs Legion is a crime.
