Few video games have touched upon slavery of any kind. So when Assassin’s Creed: Freedom Cry rolled around in 2013, it was interesting to see how it would handle it.

It is safe to say that the game more than delivered, and that was in no small part due to protagonist Adéwalé. Freedom Cry is a worthy title of the game, offering up an impassioned depiction of slavery in the Caribbean during the 18th Century. Adéwalé is a true hero, struggling between his obligations to the Assassin order and his desire to end slavery once and for all.

Picking the latter, it is a testament to the character's resolve and his need to do what is right. Even during the events of Black Flag, Adéwalé often spoke out about the issue, ordering his captain, Edward Kenway, not to fire on ships that were transporting slaves. At such a brutal time in history, especially for people of colour, portraying such an admirable character is a breath of fresh air, touching on a delicate subject with genuine grace.

Adéwalé is an inspiration to us all to speak out against tyranny and discrimination in any form. His wish for a better life for his peers and his resolution when acting upon it are what made for a such a magical and memorable character.
