10 Greatest Horror Video Game Endings

8. I Have No Mouth, And I Must Scream

Walking Dead ending
Cyberdreams

Harlan Ellison's short story I Have no Mouth and I Must Scream is one of the bleakest depictions of a possible future ever seen in literature. It tells of a world that has been ravaged by an artificial intelligence named AM after being programmed to fight a world war for humanity. AM is a vicious and evil being who destroys all of humanity, barring five, whom he keeps alive to torture.

The game sees you take on each of these five individuals' roles throughout and has multiple endings depending on how well you manage to solve AM's games. However, in five out of the seven possible climaxes, you get the same result, which happens to be one of the most horrifying culminations to any piece of gaming.

In most scenarios, the game will end with whichever character you are playing as being turned into a great, soft jelly thing, without the ability to hurt or maim yourself, in constant agony and unable to ease your suffering. This ending is ripped straight out of the source material, which is quoted verbatim by each character.

AM ultimately loses in most scenarios, but humanity's victory is offset by the barbaric and depressing punishment the player receives, ultimately reflecting the nihilistic tone that the short story encompasses.
