10 Greatest Horror Video Game Endings
7. Dead Space
The first Dead Space game completely reinvented the sci-fi horror genre in gaming. It gave players an utterly terrifying ride through a dark and bleak sci-fi world full of intimidating monsters and dramatic tension. It also has an ending that had players taken entirely by surprise.
Our protagonist for this title is Isaac Clarke, an engineer who finds himself navigating a space vessel inhabited by the terrifying Necromorphs. Throughout the game, Isaac searches for his girlfriend Nicole, who appears and communicates with Isaac on his journey.
However, by the end of the narrative, we come to learn that these messages received from Nicole are nothing more than hallucinations, caused by Isaac's damaged sanity and an alien artefact called "The Marker". After leaving the planet Aegis VII with his life, a distraught Isaac mourns the loss of his girlfriend. Soon a message appears on his screen from Nicole, which he promptly ignores, assuming it's a trick of the mind. However, he is then suddenly attacked by a violent hallucination of her.
This abrupt and shocking ending brings into question the information we know. It is a massive question of Isaac's sanity, throwing in one last shock before the title finishes, yet still ending the story satisfyingly.
