10 Greatest Horror Video Game Endings
4. Call Of Cthulhu
This video game adaptation of the popular board game based on the work of H.P Lovecraft was somewhat divisive upon its release. Although it looked stunning, it was stifled with lacklustre RPG mechanics and filled to the brim with unclear story elements. With all that said, it still has an utterly shocking climax that brought a sudden uptake in scale.
The game centres around a private investigator named Edward Pierce who travels to the strange whaling town of Darkwater. Whilst there he uncovers a secret cult with sinister intentions and ends up getting dragged into a cosmic and threatening mystery.
Since the title is a role-playing game, the player is given many options that influence the ending, with some causing the protagonist to end up dead, or living in a new nightmarish situation. The final decision rests on a climactic summoning ritual.
No matter what happens, it is never a happy story for Edward Pierce - as is expected with Lovecraft - but one particular highlight is what happens if you choose to take part in the ritual. In this instance, the Great Old One Cthulhu appears in all his horrifying glory, and although it only lasts for a brief second, it is momentous.
