10 Greatest Horror Video Game Endings
5. Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly
The Fatal Frame games are some of the most haunting and unique video game titles in horror. The second instalment - Crimson Butterfly - exists with very little connection to its predecessor, but still achieves the same creepy and disturbing atmosphere, something that is captured by the perfect ending.
Crimson Butterfly's story follows the Amakura twins, named Mio and Mayu. After the two visit their favourite play spot, the older sister Mayu ends up following a red butterfly that she sees and Mio follows. The two then discover a haunted village that is inhabited by the tortured souls of the dead.
It is revealed that this village is home to a deep and dark tunnel system, which ends in a "Hellish Abyss", a deep hole that collects dead spirits. In order to appease this abyss and keep it from releasing the dead, a ritual was performed whereby the elder of two twins would strangle their younger sibling, allowing their spirit to act as guardian.
The villagers become insistent on Mio and Mayu enacting this ceremony to save them from a perilous fate, and the Crimson Butterfly climax sees that happen, with the now-deceased twin becoming a red butterfly, linking back to the game's beginning.
There are multiple endings to the title, but this one stands out as the most profound and heart-breaking.
