10 Greatest Super Mario Spin-Offs Of All Time
7. Mario Party 4
Mario Party has earned itself a notorious reputation for being a friendship destroyer. Set across an interactive game board, 4 players compete to earn the most stars, utilising dice rolls to decide how far you move. it quickly became a local multiplayer favourite and Mario Party 4 was one of its better entries.
MP4 featured 6 different boards, mostly hosted by side characters such as Toad or Goomba. Each board contains its own event spaces and after all four players have moved, you’ll be placed into a minigame to compete for a coin-based prize.
Coins are used for buying stars, obtained through the board’s host at 20 coins each but can also be used to buy items, swinging this competition in your favour.
Stars could be stolen, using Boo to take these from other players or found within a hidden block, placed at random board spaces with each new game.
Once you’ve completed the last turn, you’ll be awarded them as bonus stars depending on how you played, and a winner is then determined.
It knew how to test friendships and whilst it didn’t review brilliantly, its competitive multiplayer is what kept players coming back for more. It’s hard to recommend if you’re playing alone but for local game nights, Nintendo were onto a winner.
