8. Handsome Jack - Borderlands 2

Borderlands 2 had its share of brilliantly quirky characters - and look out for another one a little lower down our list - and its loony antagonist, Handsome Jack, is unquestionably one of the best. He's narcissistic, he owns a moon, and for the first portion of the game, he's just a bit of a laugh, really, but things soon enough get genuinely dark and sinister, as we come to realise that he's not the campy, "harmless" villain we had expected, but a genuinely bad man who will make your spine shiver. It turns out that the guy isn't just an ego-maniac, but a murderous psychopath, too, and so when we have to face off against him in The Vault of the Warrior, it's not a boss fight to be taken lightly. Still, he's not one to go down easily, and even after we beat him, he summons and takes charge of the Warrior, resulting in another tough-as-nails boss fight before the game ends. Jack finally dies at the game's end, but his psychotic streak and animated personality help to make him one of the most memorable villains - and all-out characters - in recent gaming history. How they can top this for the third game - assuming it happens - is anyone's guess.
