3. The Traveler - Journey

Like the game itself, Journey's unnamed protagonist is mysterious and we don't know much about him; we know nothing of what brought him to this point, who he is, or really even where he is going or why, but as they say, this game is not about the why, but the sheer majesty of that journey. We begin drifting through sand dunes, before we pass through what are clearly the crumbled remnants of a civilisation, before we finally make our way to the mountain that has been teasing us in the distance for the entire game. Though the game barely runs over an hour in length, it proved one of the most engrossing and beautiful gaming experiences of all time, all without needing to inundate us with endless back story and exposition. The protagonist, a mute, robed figure, is trying to make it to the top of a mountain, that is all we know. It's easy to assume that this trek is a pilgrimage, but what awaits the character at the end of this journey is never revealed. Nevertheless, with its gorgeous character design and interesting, vague motivations, Journey is a game that asks the player to fill in the gaps without feeling cheap or malnourished.
