Mercer Frey is maybe one of the most useful companions you can get in the entirety of Skyrim - which is, of course, why he's a team mate you get for all of one quest.

However, because the damage he deals is so damn high, many players get to the quest where you joins them, and then simply leave the area, informally recruiting the assassin for as long as their heart desires.

This isn't to suggest it's unfair you don't keep Mercer on as an ally, because the reason you can't is pretty fair: it's revealed that he's betrayed the Thieves Guild, and sort of ruined everyone's life just a touch in doing so, putting him at the top of your "to stab" list.

But damn if he wasn't a powerhouse in the brief (or significantly less brief) bit of time you tag teamed together.
