With a name like Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice most players would be forgiven for expecting a story about some sort of sweet demon sword and whatever consequences come with said weapon. However it only takes five minutes in game to realise that no, this is not your standard action adventure game.

In Hellblade the protagonist Senua deals with something not often associated with video game characters and even when it is, not in a good light.

Psychosis is portrayed in game via the various pieces of Norse Mythology that attempt to stop Senua in her quest, creatures like the Surt, Hel, and Yarm all stand in her way and restrict her from her quest.

Via flashbacks the game reveals that Senua's visions of these creatures are exactly that, visions. Each manifests itself as a dark representation of her past of abuse by her father and her own personal mental condition that has been festering since.

The game is a powerful comment on mental health and psychosis that honestly has never been quite represented the same before or since. It stands truly unique because of it, and with the excellent attention to detail the developers gave it's unlikely it'll be topped anytime soon.
