4. Super Metroid - A More Relaxed Samus
Whilst this may also be feasible in the original Metroid, I've gone for the sequel as it's the superior game... and it's my list.
Super Metroid's alternate ending isn't so much a story changer, it's more of a reward for being good at the game.
However, being good isn't enough. You have to master the layout and course of action and be quick about it. Speedrunning may be big business now, but this was the elite test of it back in day.
It's not enough to finish Super Metroid from start to finish, oh no. The hard part was finishing it in less than three hours.
Whilst it may not change anything that happens in the story, it rewards you with an alternate ending screen. If you've never heard of what this is, I won't spoil it for you.
It's hardly anything to get excited about by today's standards, but back in 1994, the notion of this kind of skill was stuff of legend.
Later Metroid games incorporated a similar kind of time trial in them, but for me and many, Super Metroid is one of the pinnacle examples of early speedrunning achievements.
