10 Hated Video Game Moments You're Totally Wrong About

4. The Kid Dies - Shadow of the Tomb Raider

Final Fantasy X
Square Enix

Shadow of the Tomb Raider kicks off with Lara Croft grabbing the Dagger of Chak Chel and triggering an apocalyptic event called the Cleansing, causing a massive tsunami which floods the Mexican island of Cozumel.

This causes considerable death and damage, and in a massively controversial moment, even results in a young boy falling to his death right in front of the player's eyes.

While many players reported reloading the game in an attempt to reach the boy faster and save him, there's actually no way to rescue him - you simply have to watch him die.

And it's ultimately a vital moment for the narrative, for Lara to see the un-fixable consequences of her tomb raiding actions.

After all, this is the only game in the series that really reckons with the wider implications of Lara pilfering ancient artefacts and her general "white saviour" status, even if it ultimately lets her off the hook a little too easily at the end.

To see the real, ugly human cost of her adventuring feels necessary considering the series' history of being totally blinkered to it, even if it was always going to rub some players the wrong way.
