10 Hated Video Game Moments You're Totally Wrong About
3. Rubber Bullets - Yakuza 4
Yakuza 4 features the single most hated moment in the entire series, with its utterly barmy plot twist where it's revealed that the apparent massacre of the Ueno Seiwa clan by Taiga Saejima didn't go down how we thought.
Rather, Sejima unknowingly used weapons loaded with rubber bullets, meaning he didn't kill the 18 men but simply knock them out, after which Katsuragi entered the shop and legit killed them all.
Now, this twist is as close to objectively stupid as one can possibly get, and it also marked the point where many felt that Sega had quite literally lost the plot, that they genuinely thought players would take such silliness seriously.
Yet are we really about to pretend that a franchise with boss fights against construction equipment and characters with names like "Walking Erection" is really above... rubber bullets of all things?
Yes, it's contrived and absurd, but isn't that Yakuza/Like a Dragon in a nutshell?
It's a big, daft, cheesy melodramatic soap opera crime thriller franchise, and if you approach the twist with that in mind, it doesn't feel excessively out of place at all.
