10 Hidden Meanings Behind Iconic Video Game Characters
6. Crash Bandicoot Is A Looney Tune
When the original Playstation made its way to the market, Sony was certain that they needed an excellent character to compete against Sega's blue hedgehog and Nintendo's Italian plumber.
They undoubtedly got that with Crash Bandicoot, as the wild and energetic marsupial went on to be a roaring success for the console and its developers.
Andy Gavin - the co-founder of Naughty Dog - revealed in an interview with Ars Technica that Crash was designed to feel more like a cartoon character than a video game protagonist.
Naughty Dog knew that the he needed to stand out, and they believed that taking inspiration from cartoons such as DuckTales and Animaniacs would help this. It certainly paid off, as Crash isn't your run of the mill gaming lead, and this was a major part of the character's appeal.
The overly goofy deaths and wacky cartoon aesthetics all brought to life by the powerful console made this design work perfectly, as Crash would feel comfortably at home in a Looney Tunes cartoon, which was exactly what the developers were going for.
