10 Hidden Playable Video Game Characters You Totally Missed

3. Mew - Pokemon Red/Blue

It's hard to overstate what a phenomenon Pokemon Red and Blue were way back in 1998. Or maybe it isn't, seeing as the brand is still as popular as ever 14 years later. Buying one version, you didn't know which Pokemon, specifically, you were missing out on in the other version. In order to "catch them all" you had to trade Pokemon by physically linking your Game Boy to a friend's.

As you and all the other kids at recess finally collected all 150 in the game, word began to spread of a secret, 151st. Very early this was thought to probably be Mew. After all, Mewtwo was already in the game as the 150th Pokemon, but its progenitor was nowhere to be found.

And that's because it wasn't supposed to be. It was intended as an exclusive gift to people who attended various official Nintendo events. But even in those days, it didn't take too long for word to spread about how to unlock Mew using a glitch.

However, the process was so precise, it required step by step instructions and excellent timing. That, or get an older kid to just do it for you.
