Another Mario appearance now, illustrating that the vintage days of console mascots are very much alive. With the release of the Nintendo Switch, the failure of the WiiU was washed away, and for the first time really since the N64, Nintendo we’re big challengers in the home console market.

The original Wii was more of a party game console, after all, despite Super Mario Galaxy 2 making the cut here.

One of the reasons the Switch has enjoyed so much success was the massive popularity of their longtime mascot’s open world adventure. The best incarnation Mario game in years hitting Metacritic’s 20th spot on the all time list, Odyssey reinvented the Italian Plumber while still feeling familiar and nostalgic.

The story beats of Bowser stealing Peach was present yet again, but the fresh new worlds and the companion of Cappy meant nothing about the game felt stale.

The graphics can’t compete with the most photorealistic efforts of this decade’s best, but then they were never supposed to. The lovely, cartoonish feel is perfect for both Mario and the Nintendo Switch, and solidifies exactly why Nintendo is such a uniquely important developer.
