10 Horrifying Hellscapes That Video Game Heroes Call Home

6. The Mind of a Madman - The Evil Within

Bioshock Horror
Bethesda Softworks

Shinji Mikami’s The Evil Within was a highly anticipated survival horror that promised to be unlike anything we had ever played before. Players take control of Detective Sebastian Castellanos as his investigates an incident at Beacon Hospital. All of a sudden, the world goes mad; the laws of physics go out the window, geography rearranges itself seemingly freely and Sebastian finds himself beset by all manor of monsters, most notably the terrifying and multi-limbed spider-woman.

Making his way across this ever-changing hellscape it becomes clear that somehow Sebastian has become trapped inside the mind of a deranged scientist and murderer; Ruben Victoriano – known as Ruvik. This is a world where Ruvik rules, where his every whim becomes reality; and Ruvik is a very disturbed man indeed.

The aforementioned spider-woman is a strange reflection of his lost sister, The Keeper is a reflection of Ruvik’s unbridled rage – which continuously resurrects no matter how many times you kill it. Fire and flame play a huge part as Ruvik has torturous memories of the night he nearly died in a barn fire. Thing progressively get worse until you find yourself quite literally in a giant representation of Ruvik’s brain, facing the man himself. Definitely NOT where you want to be.
