With work starting on the sequel to Dead Island in 2012 after a successful pitch by Yager Studios (the guys behind the excellent Spec Ops: The Line), development on the game came to a halt late last year thanks to creative differences between the studio and the game’s publisher, Deep Silver.

With their work seemingly being scrapped in favour of a new vision, development duties as of 2016 have since been handed over to the UK based studio Sumo Digital, refuting rumours that the project had been cancelled altogether.

However, what shape this new incarnation of Dead Island 2 is going to take, nobody really knows, as the sequel hasn’t been officially re-unveiled since Deep Silver's announcement that it hadn’t been axed. Likewise, with the success of other open world zombie games (we’re looking at you, Dying Light) and the lack of enthusiasm around a new Dead Island game at all, Sumo Digital are going to have to really wow people if they want audiences back on their side.

Which is why we’re probably going to see the project go dark for a few years. Deep Silver can’t risk disappointing fans for a second time by once again showing off the sequel before it’s ready for prime-time.
