1. Joker Dies - Batman: Arkham City

Because Batman is defined by his relationship with the Joker, it was a ballsy move to kill off the Clown Prince of Crime in Batman: Arkham City. With the harlequin of hate finally put to rest, gamers were curious how the follow-ups would work without him. So, when the teaser for the prequel, Arkham: Origins, showed Bats going head-to-head with Black Mask, fans of the underrated supervillain were excited.

But it was a bluff. Halfway through the game, it's revealed that Black Mask is the Joker in disguise and he serves as a central antagonist for the rest of the story.

But when the sequel, Batman: Arkham Knight, was announced, fans were certain the Joker wouldn't be in it this time since it was a direct continuation of Arkham City. But the developers couldn't help shoving the demented jester into the game once again. After Batman gets infected with the Scarecrow's Fear Gas, he finds himself suffering from hallucinations of the Joker - a trait that occurs for the remainder of the main campaign.

If the developers were so adamant about including the Joker in every entry, it makes you wonder why they bothered to kill him off to begin with.
