4. The Apocalypse - Mother 3
After being in development for 12 years, the sequel for Earthbound, Mother 3, was finally released in 2006. But when players completed the beloved RPG, they were desperate for more.
But the reason they were desperate for more is because they needed to know what happened next since the game ends with a MASSIVE cliffhanger. In the climax, Lucas awakens the Dark Dragon, which is destined to recreate the world.
But before the world can be reborn, the old one must be destroyed. So, when the Dragon is released, it unleashes an apocalyptic attack on Lucas' home island, obliterating everything to bits. As the world lies in ruin, the screen abruptly cuts to black.
If you wait a while, Lucas will assure the player that he and his friends survived the Dragon's assault. But since society is left resembling a scene from Mad Max, that is far from reassuring. Because of this ending, many assumed the story would continue in a sequel. But the same year Mother 3 was released, Earthbound creator, Shigesato Itoi, stated there was no plans for another instalment, leaving Lucas' fate uncertain and incredibly depressing.
