10 Hugely Beloved Video Game Sidekicks - Ranked From Worst To Best
6. Weighted Companion Cube (Portal)
Portal is a special game. Very few games are as tightly written and well put together as the original Portal was, and fewer still have you form a deep, profound emotional bond with an inanimate object. Portal manages to neatly fall into both of those categories.
The Companion Cube was pretty much the closest thing you had to a friend or an ally in Portal. Even though at the start it nothing more than just a block, a tool to put on switches, slowly and ever so subtly it started to grow on you as you traversed the various levels. It even got to the point where you started asking it for ideas about how to progress – or was that just me?
And then you’re forced to throw it into the incinerator. You kill your only companion from this horrible journey – and even though it’s an inanimate object, it really feels like you’re killing it. And it doesn’t complain or make any protests (well, it doesn’t really have a choice in the matter).
At least it survived, and somewhere out there, somebody else has made a new friend.
