10 Iconic Video Game Features That Were Invented By Accident
1. The Konami Code
Last but not least, we have the Konami Code. Arguably the most famous cheat code in existence, it is present not only in a countless number of games but also in various other pieces of media too, including music, TV, film, and toys. Who would have guessed that it was an accident?
During playtesting for the home port of the 1985 arcade game Gradius, Kazuhisa Hashimoto struggled with the gameplay. In order to make the game easier, he created a cheat code for himself:
⭡⭡ ⭣⭣⭠ ⭢ ⭠ ⭢ B A
This cheat code granted Hashimoto the full set of the game’s powerups before he naturally gained them through the gameplay.
Of course, the code was left in by accident when the game was prepared for mass production, but remained there due to the fact that removal would result in bugs. Eventually, it was picked up on by gamers and went down in history.
For a code so famous, known even by some members of the general public, to have been left in the game by accident, is incredibly iconic.
