10 Immortal Video Game Moments You'll Replay Forever
7. Marston's Last Stand (Red Dead Redemption)
There are many, many games that make players utter a quick, "...son of a bitch" and realise they're in a no-win situation. After all, that's a tried and tested plot device; give the player untold power then strip it away and make them work to regain those lost weapons and skills.
Red Dead Redemption, a wonderfully-weaving tale of the American Frontier, was pinned down by a growing kinship between player and John Marston, the man they were controlling. By the end, Marston's past sins are almost washed away and you want him to be free of the government's iron fist so he can settle down with his family to live a normal life.
Then, after doing everything the Bureau wants, Marston is cruelly outgunned and shot down on the soil of his own home.
There are a few reasons to play this one. Firstly, it's a memorable moment and the entire game is worth revisiting anyway. Secondly (and more importantly), you want to see if it's possible to mow down every man standing in John's way and end the story on a happier note.
It isn't, but that won't stop us trying.
