10 Immortal Video Game Moments You'll Replay Forever
8. Stepping Out Of Vault 101 (Fallout 3)
The bright blue sheen of that Vault 101 jumpsuit contrasts heavily with the dingy, dusty gloom of the Washington wasteland, and it creates a sense of foreboding that never fades no matter how many times you sit down to experience it.
Stepping out of the relative safety (radroaches don't count) of the Vault and slowly realising that the entire world is at one's fingertips is incredibly liberating. It's the kind of power that open-world RPGs should gift to the player, and Fallout 3 did so better than most.
New Vegas and 4 may have tried to mimic the appeal, but they couldn't quite lay a glove on what made that first foray out into the middle of a post-apocalyptic world struggling to regain former glory so special. Everything is perfect, from the angry skies to the scorched terrain, and it's all helped along by that harsh natural light that blinds the player temporarily when they emerge from beneath glowing bulbs inside Vault 101.
Timeless.
