While there isn't a particularly obvious narrative in Dark Souls that you're exposed to through cutscenes, the game fleshes out its characters, plot and locations through some of the best environmental storytelling in gaming. You see, Dark Souls doesn't spell everything out you, but instead actually relies on players finding out all of the secrets hidden throughout whilst communicating with each other to put everything together. Could you imagine any other game leaving it up to the players to interact and develop the story together, digging through and interpreting every little scrap of information in order to build a full history of the games story? When you think about how risky this method of storytelling is, and consider the amount of responsibility it gave to the audience, its a miracle this gamble turned out well at all. But thats why its so brilliant; not only was FromSoftware's method of storytelling genuinely innovative, but the plot that was hidden in the game was totally worth discovering - its why Dark Souls is one of the most beloved video games of the last generation.
