10 Incredible Video Games That Should've NEVER Worked
6. Oxenfree
Many were "over" the whole walking simulator genre before this, and like them, I wasn't convinced that this would bring anything new to the formula, 2D or otherwise.
And then many people played it.
Now many people, including myself, won't shut up about it.
To tell you what happens would ruin the experience for you, but safe to say that it subverted the entire genre entirely. So much that it opened the doors to play more games in this vein, like the phenomenal What Remains of Edith Finch.
Oxenfree isn't just a walking simulator, nor is it just a coming-of-age tale about some friends on an island. There's a plot that curiously baits you in, not to mention an unusual take on established sci-fi tropes and rules.
As I say, it's hard to recommend this without spoiling it. But it's the same as any decent movie you see: you want to give the bare minimum away, the bait, so when people do watch it you can both go, "I know!" about it.
Trust me, get some Oxenfree in your life.
