10 Incredible Video Games That Should've NEVER Worked
5. Huntdown
When it comes to paying tribute or homage, games tend to go one of two ways. They are either subtle little nods to what came before, or they cram every throwback and reference possible just to constantly remind you.
Huntdown, however, gets it just right.
It doesn't bring anything remarkably new in gameplay, but like the old adage goes, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it".
Playing like an early 90's side-scroller yet chock full of tasteful homages, tight controls and nostalgic soundtrack, Huntdown should be on anyone's list.
The "it shouldn't work" of this entry is that it shouldn't be as incredible as it is. Retro-inspired games come and go, yet Huntdown doesn't want its five minutes of fame.
It wants you to take in the love letter to the craft that it is, whilst sticking out this challenging tribute in its massive glory.
It does for run and gun that Hotline Miami did for top-down puzzlers: adding that retro yet tasteful hyper-violence to a formula that needed shaking up.
Come for the addictive gameplay, stay for the Akira, Blade Runner and Terminator (to name a few) movie posters
