Berserk is among the most popular mangas of all time, which is why it was no surprise when the hyper-violent saga received an anime adaptation.

The TV series popularised Berserk in the Western world, inspiring Sega to hire Yuke's to develop a video game adaptation called Sword of the Berserk: Guts' Rage. (If you think that's a mouthful, its Japanese title is Berserk Millennium Falcon Arc: Chapter of the Flowers of Oblivion.)

Though Yuke's is better known for handling wrestling properties, Gut's Rage captured the bombastic bloodshed and chaotic combat of the source material.

Rather than being a mindless hack-and-slash, Gut's Rage was surprisingly imaginative. Shenmue is renowned for popularising Quick-Time Events, but Gut's Rage incorporated this gameplay first. The game also utilised QTEs more creatively, since executing this mechanic correctly can change the hero's set path. This type of innovation encouraged multiple playthroughs to see the outcomes of each QTE.

Sadly, Gut's RAGE sold so poorly outside Japan, there's never been a Berserk title since released in the West.

Even though the property has remained popular for decades, there's no hint Gut's Rage will return any time soon.
