Creative Assembly has been working on the Total War franchise for 20 years. They took their first steps into the Warhammer fantasy universe in 2016 and followed it up with the much more expansive sequel in 2017. Doing things the franchise had never done before, such as using magic and flying units, was a risk that paid off in a big way.

The story campaign sees several different factions battling for control over the Great Vortex. Each faction has specific objectives that they must complete in order to progress to a final battle. An open world mode is also available that lets the player choose from any of the 15 available races and 59 available lords to take over the Old World in a more traditional conquest way. Captured cities need to be managed and keeping the populace happy so that they don’t revolt is just as important as getting gold to raise your armies.

Large scale strategy has rarely been done as well as it has here. Different lords and races give great variety to the battles as they have different spells and abilities that may be unique to them.
