10 Incredibly Calm Moments In Otherwise Intense Games

7. Kreisau Headquarters €“ Wolfenstein: The New Order

Wolfenstein: The New Order is surprisingly poignant for a game that is largely just about killing Nazis. As the latest addition to a first-person shooter franchise that dates back to 1992 (though the first Wolfenstein was released in 1981, it was actually a side scrolling stealth game), Wolfenstein: The New Order tells the story of a group of resistance fighters in an alternate reality where the Nazis won World War II. You play through the campaign as the franchise's iconic, meat-headed hero, BJ Blazkowicz. The game starts with a last-ditch, gung-ho assault on General Wilhelm €œDeathshead€ Strasse's stronghold in 1946, Blazkowicz is knocked unconscious and forced into a vegetative state until 1960, when he's forced to make a quick recovery as Nazis begin executing patients in the Polish insane asylum he's been stuck in all those years. After freeing your old war buddy from a prison in Berlin, you're led to the Resistance headquarters that is situated deep in the heart of the Nazi capital. It's an underground complex that houses the renewed Kreisau Circle, a ragtag group of dissidents who spend their time gleaning information about the Nazi regime while trying €“ with limited resources €“ to fight against it. The atmosphere in this homely abode is warm and invigorating; it's a welcome change of pace where tasks involve fetching tools and conversing with fellow Resistance members rather than blasting through hordes of Nazis.
