10 Insanely Cool Ways Video Games Were Revealed
1. Joakim Mogren - Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain
In typical fashion, Hideo Kojima decided to get a little meta with Metal Gear fans in the lead-up to Phantom Pain's official reveal.
The eccentric auteur decided (because why not?) to pull the wool over everyone's eyes for the series' fifth entry and bill what, in 2024, would end up still being Snake's most recent outing as an altogether different IP. To pull off the stunt, Kojima invented faux developer Moby Dick Studio and installed Joakim Mogren as its head. Neither entity ever existed, with the latter's name, played by an actor wrapped in bandages, an anagram of the mastermind's own, more recognisable, name.
The charade would continue until 2013 when, in a staged interview during GDC, Mogren would be quizzed by Geoff Keighley on why one of Phantom Pain's pre-release screenshots inexplicably featured the FOX Engine logo. Also in attendance to supposedly reveal a new title, Kojima would eventually end the ruse by confirming Mogren to be a puppet and Phantom Pain to, in fact, be Metal Gear Solid V.
Bizarre? You bet, but at this point, it's safe to assume nothing is ever as it seems where Joakim's alter-ego is concerned.
