Okay, there's nothing inherently special about how Final Fantasy VII Remake was revealed. In typical E3 fashion, confirmation of Cloud's return was delivered in trailer format, but this is one of those times when context is important.

Normally, the last thing you want to do as a Sony executive is go on stage and talk about Final Fantasy. Inevitably, the conversation will land on the series' most beloved entry and the announcement (or lack thereof) of a remake.

In 2015, VP Adam Boyes, knowing what was on the cards, closed out his segment (or so we thought) with a trailer for World of Final Fantasy. Not to throw shade, but the retro-styled RPG didn't exactly elicit thunderous applause, nor was it expected to. In a fantastic bait-and-switch, Boyes had one last gift to share with the crowd. As the screen went black and the familiar theme of FF7 came to the fore, Boyes' smug grin said it all. Fans only had to wait another five years before Remake would materialize

Miraculously, the return of Avalanche and Co. managed to largely meet 20-plus years of lofty expectations.
